Turn the Page KC's Literacy Spotlight Features

The Michael English Literacy Spotlight highlights local and regional authors of inclusive children's books that ignite a passion for reading. We will shine this  spotlight at least quarterly on a local author and their books via our digital platforms while sharing copies with children through our book distribution events.

The Elle Hogan Literacy Spotlight is a monthly feature that highlights outstanding children's picture books that center inclusive narratives and social-emotional learning.

Access to Inclusive Books

Increase Availability of Books that Honor and Represent Children's Racial and Cultural Identities

To become readers, children must be invited into reading with inclusive literacy materials, ones that welcome, celebrate, intrigue, and comfort all children. Books, in particular, must serve as "windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors" for children to see themselves, to see others different from themselves, and to recognize that they have access to the paths they want in life.

Turn the Page KC puts those ideas in action by making materials available that include but are not limited to:

  • diverse racial, ethnic, and religious representation
  • people from all continuums of gender and sexuality
  • varieties of family structures
  • depictions of diverse ability statuses
  • stories that show how identities intersect

Inclusion is an ongoing practice, not a one-time achievement. As our community continues to grow and change, so do we strive to keep doing better.
