Preventing the Summer Slide

Picture two kindergarten children who are on summer break. Imagine that one child is from a low-income family and the other is from a middle-income family. While these kids learned at about the same rate during kindergarten, the middle-income child begins to move ahead in reading during the summer months, while the low-income child falls behind about two months. Access to a literacy rich environment is a critical divider for these kids. When they return to school in the fall to start first-grade, the gap between them has already widened. Luckily, thousands of kids in Kansas City will attend a quality, literacy-rich summer learning program this year at one of our partner organizations including LINC, the Upper Room, Boys & Girls Club, Phoenix Family, and Freedom Schools. These organizations host full-day programs with certified teachers, volunteer tutors, and fun, enriching activities for elementary aged kids. Data provided by these programs showed that students who attended a summer program in Kansas City increased their literacy skills by 12%. Since 2013 enrollment in these programs has quadrupled and appears to be on the rise.

Turn the Page KC’s summer learning collaborative aims to fill these high-quality summer programs to capacity, as well as provide unique, literacy rich experiences for students participating. This summer, we have worked to inform the community about summer program enrollment, hired dozens of tutors who will be working one-on-one with students enrolled in these programs, and are hosting a summer learning celebration in a few weeks.
