School Suspension Summit
September 6, 2017 @ 8:00 am – 3:00 pm
We know that when students are not in school, they are not building a strong foundation for learning. Studies have shown that boys of color, specifically African-American boys, have a greater likelihood to be suspended from school. Missouri is one of eleven states who reported higher gaps than the national average between the suspension rates of black students and white students for both boys and girls. One in four KCMO black male K-3 students were suspended in 2015.
Turn the Page KC, the KCMO Health Department, and the Mayor’s Office will convene school district administrators, principals, and community stakeholders to review city wide suspension data and discuss effective alternatives that lead to better academic outcomes. Join us to learn more about how you can help reduce the number of school suspensions, particularly for African-American boys, and raise attendance rates throughout Kansas City, Missouri schools.
